FAQ - Rating System
Common Questions and Answers about the Rating System. Q. What Rating system are you using? (2003-01-19) A system developed by Russell Mollot (President of Chess Express Ratings, Inc.) in the early 1980's. A complete description is available at http://www.chess-express.com/explain.htm. Q. Why the switch to the new Rating system? (2003-01-19) A few reasons: (1) Speed. To get new players up and running with a Rating faster. The new system only requires the playing of five (5) games for a Rating instead of eight (8) like the last system. (2) Simplicity. We could not fully implement the USCF System without it being a huge undertaking. And trying to put in just some of it wasn't working. (3) Fit. This new system just seems to "fit" MBC better. Q. Why isn't my Rating showing up On-Line? You must complete more than five (5) Ranked Games for your Rating to show up on-line. Q. Why is everybody Rated so close together? A small difference in Ratings, lets say 100 points, represents a fairly large difference in skill. Q. I have a higher Win % than another User but I am Rated lower. Why? Ratings change based on your probability of winning a giving game. So winning against someone who - statistically speaking - you should beat, doesn't make as big a change in your Rating as winning a game you should loose. This isn't to say that playing lower Rated players is without merit. Winning any game is good for your Rating. |
